Energy risk standards

Electricity and fuel systems are the infrastructure on which every other sector depends, and they are being rebuilt during the energy transition while exposure to heat, storms, drought and cyber attack rises. This section of the Energy and critical infrastructure subsite defines records for assets, outages, supply adequacy and transition risk so that grid operators, regulators and investors can trace a cascade from a hazard to an outage to dependent services with evidence that is comparable across systems and borders. Every artifact of the area carries a UNI (Unique Nexus Identifier), which identifies and never certifies.

01Scope

Energy risk standards: what the area covers, and what it leaves to others.

The nexus domains section of Energy and Critical Infrastructure. Scope as the area context entry states it (PROPOSED).

In scope 5

  • Generation, transmission and distribution asset records with location and hazard exposure
  • Outage and restoration event records with cause and customers affected
  • Supply adequacy and fuel-security indicators
  • Transition-risk records (stranded-asset exposure, policy scenarios)
  • Cross-sector dependency records for cascade analysis

Out of scope 3

  • Electricity market rules and price formation
  • Equipment safety standards and grid codes
  • Commercial trading data

Jurisdictions No jurisdiction note is recorded for this area yet; jurisdiction narrows what applies and never implies that a Nexus profile satisfies a law.

02Systemic couplings

4 couplings to other areas and subsites.

Each coupling names the mechanism that links this area to another; select a card on the canvas to trace it. Mechanisms are stated in the context bank (PROPOSED).

Canvas · the area and its couplingsDesign, not a record
Energy risk standards: systemic couplingsThe couplings the area context bank records for Energy risk standards: 1 area in Energy and Critical Infrastructure, 3 areas in other subsites and 3 subsites reached. Each coupling carries a mechanism stated in the context bank (PROPOSED); a reading aid, not a dependency proof.

Fig.RUNNING marks the area you are reading; DONE an area in the same subsite, QUEUED an area elsewhere and GATE a subsite reached. Tags give reading order only, never a status. Design, not a record.

  1. Water risk standardsWater and Food SystemsCommon driver: drought lowers hydropower output and limits thermal cooling; grid failures stop water pumping and treatment.
  2. Critical infrastructure and critical entitiesEnergy and Critical InfrastructureCascade: power loss propagates to telecoms, health, transport and finance through interdependent networks.
  3. Climate risk standardsClimate and Earth SystemsFeedback: transition policy changes asset values and fuel mixes while physical climate change alters demand peaks and supply reliability.
  4. Space weather, spectrum and timing risk standardsHazards and Disaster Risk ReductionCommon driver: geomagnetic storms induce currents that damage transformers and disrupt GNSS timing used in grid synchronisation.

04Open standards

5 open standards, each with its relation.

Relations are register entries (NS-14), never conformance or equivalence statements; hover or focus a relation for its meaning. Names of standards bodies and their standards belong to their stewards and are used only to identify the documents; no text of an external standard is reproduced here.

06Data and feeds

5 sources, with provider, licence and delivery path.

Sources the area reads or proposes. Delivery follows GRIx first; a source is shown live only after an owner decision admits it for public pages.

Every feed · pending admission

No legal register row admits any of these sources for live display on public pages yet, so nothing is read from them here. A register row that exists records the source for the governed GRIx path; admission for public pages is a separate owner decision.

09Readiness

What each pathway can read from this area.

GCRI Canada evidence pathway

GCRI Canada

GCRI Canada may treat outage and asset-exposure records with source releases and correction history as evidence for cascade research; GCRI Canada decides under its own evidence and research rules, and no approval is implied.

  2. Energy dependency graph schema for NS-9 contexts
  3. Crosswalk of cyber and reliability control families (named only, no text reproduced)

12Audiences

Who works with this area: 4 audiences.

  1. Transmission and distribution system operators
  2. Energy regulators
  3. Climate and transition risk analysts in finance
  4. Civil protection planners
13Open problems

3 open problems an expert would start with.

  1. Outage data are often commercially sensitive or held by private operators; night-time lights are a proxy with known biases in cloud cover and low-density areas.
  2. No shared cause taxonomy reconciles weather, equipment and cyber causes across jurisdictions.
  3. Transition scenarios (NGFS, IEA) are not designed for asset-level downscaling, so asset-level transition risk rests on assumptions that must be stated.
